Personal Studio Spaces at the Art Barn

When artists have space, tools, and are surrounded by other creatives, we are able to pollinate across disciplines and expand as individuals and collectively.

With our new expansion into the Art Farm, we are happy to begin offering personal studio space to locals, which is a big unmet need in our community! We are thinking about this program as a Local Artist Residency that offers island artists affordable workspace, shared supplies and equipment, and accessible community. Why call it a residency? We want the Art Barn facility to feel lively and active, filled with people making art. We do not want to create an art storage unit! For this reason, we offer studio spaces via an application process, with recurring renewals of the residency commitment based on broader community access need, activeness in the space, and medium diversity of artists.

Term Length
We have three term lengths for this program: 3 month, 6 month, or 12 months. First terms will generally be 3 months, so we can make sure things are a good fit on both sides. From there, you will have the option to check in with us about renewal.

Renewal
Please keep in mind that we are working to create a lively and dynamic community art space. This may mean that we do not choose to renew a residency after a term is complete, in order to give other artists the opportunity to participate. Things we are taking into account for renewal are: whether or not artists were mostly here during their residency, how many members of the broader community are wanting to participate in this program, time of year, etc.

Residency and Membership Dues
The cost for personal studio space is $250 per month.
Fees are due at the beginning of each calendar month.

Travel and Subletting
Since a focus of this residency is creating an environment where artists are actively in the space, we would like to be kept in the loop on travel plans longer than two weeks. We can work together as a group to find subletters to fill spaces if it is appropriate. Please take your travel plans into account when selecting your residency length. We are especially focused on keeping the space active during the summer months, and there is less flexibility with travel during this time.

Sharing Spaces
Artists may share a studio if they wish, however, each person must pay for studio membership to the print/textiles space.

Classes
Local AIRS get 20% off all class fees as part of their studio rental!

Ceramics , Community Art Studio, Shared Equipment
Local AIRS renting personal space in the Community Art Studio get access to all shared Community Art Studio facilities, including the darkroom at 1255 Wold Rd. The personal studio spaces in this room are a bit smaller than our studio spaces for rent elsewhere in the Art Barn, and are less private. Artists renting space in Studio 2 or our painting loft do not get access to the C.A.S as part of their rental, but they are welcome to add on a membership if they would like to! Ceramics is not included in studio rental and can also be purchased as an add on. Learn more about studio memberships here. Note that studio memberships are eligible for tuition assistance.

Artists interested in using some of our specialty equipment like looms, spinning wheels, easels, etc may be able to borrow them for ongoing use in their personal studio.

Personal Studios in Studio 2

This space is best suited for artists who bring much of their own equipment and need less access to shared supplies. We are thinking about it like a sculpture studio but it could be a good fit for painters, weavers, glass artists, and other artists as well. It may be quieter and more private than the Community Art Room, because there is no community membership in this part of the building.

  • Studios: 4 larger, more private studios, with less shared studio space

  • Features:

    • Air compressor

    • Glass slumping kilns

    • Torch for lampwork glass

    • Access to use large equipment to be housed in your studio (floor looms, etching press)

    • These studios do not include a membership to the tools in the community art room or the ceramics studio. Artists can purchase studio membership separately if they wish. (Learn more about that here.)
