A new home for the arts on San Juan Island

For nearly a decade, Alchemy Art Center has created opportunities for creativity, connection and learning across San Juan Island. What began as a small community arts organization grew into hundreds of classes, workshops, exhibitions, performances and public programs serving thousands of islanders each year.

In 2025, the former Pelindaba Lavender Farm came up for sale. A group of supporters helped secure the property and invited Alchemy to imagine what it could become.

Today we are turning the Art Barn and Field Campus into a year-round center for art and community: studios, classrooms, artist workspaces, performance and gathering spaces, artist housing, and a permanent home for Alchemy’s programs. It is lasting cultural infrastructure for the San Juan Islands, a place where artists work, neighbors gather and young people find their creativity close to home.

Welcome to our new facility, the Alchemy Art Farm!

Former Artist-in-Residence Dustin Low created this video visualization of our plans for the Art Barn! We are building so many new and necessary uses into this space:

Community Art Studio: A shared production and teaching space with professional printing press, silkscreen, sewing machines and other equipment, five private artist studios, and access for members and classes.

Studio 2: A studio space offering four private work areas and community glass lampworking facilities for local and visiting artists. Artists rotate annually to ensure access to a broad community of artists.

Production Room: The behind-the-scenes engine producing Alchemy’s most beloved lavender products for sale in our store.

Recording Studio: A professional facility supporting local musicians and artists-in-residence.

Studio Lofts: Six quiet, private studios supporting focused creative practice for painters and independent artists.

Accessible Arts Program: A purpose-built studio and program advancing inclusive arts access for people with disabilities and their caregivers. Research for the pilot program is underway, and we are receiving applicants.

Store & Cooperative Gallery: A year-round retail space supporting earned income through local art, creative experiences, and Alchemy’s signature lavender products.

New Preschool Arts and Outdoor Play Program: A stable, welcoming, and sliding scale accessible opportunity for children to be part of Alchemy through daily outdoor education and arts engagement.

An Artist Residency Program for Established Artists: A beautiful artist residency in a historic home at the Art Farm. We will welcome three artists at a time for five week stays, to work on art and contribute to our community.

Immersive Arts Space: A flexible, high-impact venue for performances, exhibitions, classes, and immersive creative experiences open to the public.

Community Kitchen & Apothecary: A hub for food programming, classes, event preparation, and plant-based creative production.

Moving in to the Art Barn!

We have been working hard these last two months moving our print shop over to the Art Farm! The work space inside is finally taking shape. We have all of our printmaking equipment here now, plus a lot of new things like expanded textiles materials and equipment, many large work tables, and modular private spaces that will become part of our Local AIR program.

A HUGE shout out and thank you to the many many hands of studio members, past print shop users, Alchemy board members, and friends who made this big move possible.

We are SO excited for this step – it is starting to feel like a place where art will be made!

Your support brings us closer to our goal!

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for your generous support of Alchemy Art Center’s campaign to fund the sprinkler system for our new building. Because of you, we are one big step closer to realizing our vision of a thriving community space where islanders and visitors alike can experience the joy of creativity. Every contribution—large or small—brings us nearer to a safe, welcoming space where artists can share their process, their work, and their passion with the community.

We still have a ways to go before reaching our ultimate goal, but your support gives us the momentum and confidence to keep building. Thank you for believing in this vision and for helping us make it possible.

Volunteer at the Alchemy Farm Store!

Big Shout out to Kat and Suzie for all they have done so far to help us get the shop going – we are so grateful for their volunteer efforts!

We’ve got fun news – Alchemy is opening our new Farm Store on weekends starting mid-July! While we continue working through permitting, the store will offer local produce, ethically raised meats, and the remaining lavender products from the farm.

The space will also be beautifully adorned with artwork by Alchemy artists—paintings, ceramics, and prints displayed in a gallery-style setting to create an inspiring environment for visitors and volunteers alike.

We’re looking for volunteers to help staff the store—greeting visitors, sharing a bit about Alchemy, and assisting with simple sales. Each shift is three hours, with two volunteers per shift, on Friday afternoons, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the summer.

It’s a great way to support Alchemy, give back to the community, and enjoy the peaceful farm surroundings. Bring a friend—or come solo and make a new one while you’re there!

We can’t do this without you!

An extraordinary philanthropist couple, devoted to our island’s livability, has gotten this dream to where it is. But there is a lot more that we need to do, and we can’t do this without you.

In order to actualize our vision, we need to raise one million dollars to bring the property into the ownership of Alchemy, as well as necessary and immediate infrastructure improvements that must be completed in order for this dream to become a reality. Help us build something that will benefit San Juan Island forever.

Alchemy Art Farm: Join us on this exciting new journey!

Alchemy Art Farm: Join us on this exciting new journey!

We are excited to introduce you to Alchemy Art Farm, our new campus just a ¼ mile down the road from our existing home base. This vision is taking shape within the old Pelindaba Lavender Farm production building, a 14,000 sq ft facility that is ready for new life. We envision building a vibrant, multi-use art community that weaves together creativity, community, and connection.

Our space will include artist studios and classrooms, residencies, a gallery and performance venue, a community kitchen and apothecary, and more, all working together to nurture a rich and inclusive arts environment. Visitors to the Art Farm will be invited into an immersive experience where art is not only displayed but created in real time—where the process is as celebrated as the final product. By offering shared studios for printmaking, textiles, painting, and more, and welcoming up to 20 diverse artists into private and juried studios, we aim to support both long-term creative practice and short-term residencies that bring fresh energy to our island. A monthly Open House and regular open hours will invite the public to interact with artists, view in-progress work, and engage in hands-on activities, making the Art Farm a living, breathing part of the cultural fabric of San Juan Island.

Our central theater/gallery will serve as the beating heart of the campus, hosting exhibitions, performances, and immersive experiences that reflect both local voices and global perspectives. The community kitchen and herbal apothecary will offer classes and programming, while supporting the on-site picnic area with locally made to-go foods and coffee. With residential accommodations for artists-in-residence, including an ADA-accessible unit, we’re building an arts ecosystem that is welcoming, accessible, and deeply collaborative. From poetry publishing and queer advocacy to ceramics, glasswork, and dye-based practices, the Alchemy Art Farm will be a haven for experimentation, education, and joyful public engagement. We invite you to help us build this dream!

The Alchemy Farm Store (the roadside gift shop) will be a hub for both agricultural and lavender products and eventually artwork made by artists here at Alchemy. We envision a place where people can get a coffee and a to-go snack, enjoy the garden, and interact with artists in the process of making work. It will be a cozy spot to curl up with a cappuccino in the winter, and the perfect location for a family picnic in the summertime. The shop space and open houses will create broad sales opportunities to local artists, and provide inspiration for visitors.
