Stitching Stories: Hand Quilting Workshop

  • Alchemy Art Center 1255 Wold Road Friday Harbor, WA, 98250 United States (map)

“Stitching Stories” is a 3-part quilting workshop designed for beginner to intermediate sewers who want to explore quilting as a means of storytelling. Quilts have the potential to pass wisdom from generation to generation. The embodied, meditative act of quilting, a skill passed down from mother to daughter, may be the wisdom itself. As we construct hand-quilted compositions, we will reflect on quilting’s power to bridge generations– honoring the past while creating something to be interpreted by the future. While there will be a brief introduction to machine sewing, the focus of this workshop will be on constructing composition and pattern through hand work. This will include hand-quilting, applique, embroidery, embellishment. Although fabric will be provided, participants are encouraged to bring their own meaningful fabric– a worn but beloved shirt, a sentimental textile– to incorporate into their piece, as a storytelling device.

This class is taught by visiting artist Lily Nash. Lily has developed this class based on her art practice - this is the only time she will be teaching this here at Alchemy, so if you are interested, be sure to sign up!
